  •

In preparation for the “Day of Giving” we recently sent home a packet for each family.

You may recall from an earlier announcement, that we are asking families to please help in our efforts. Enclosed in the packet are the directions, the letters, address sheet, and the envelops. Each family has been asked to identify 10 persons they feel comfortable sending the letters to in hope that they will donate. Please sign each letter or feel free to add a note as well.

In short, we are doing the very best to and trying several routes to build a successful capital improvement plan, and a tuition assistance fund and we need you to be a part of this campaign. Now we rank 6th out of the 16 schools in the South region and that is good, but frankly we want to grow and without the necessary capital it will be a strain on all of us.

Our goal remains to become self-sufficient and self-sustaining. This is part of the process. We have established and funded a tuition endowment plan and we are making progress. But we begin this next phase, our “SPS Day of Giving” to move us in a direction that allows for greater long range planning.

    Thank you

    Dr. Brian M. Dougherty

  • Announcement

There were a few errors in the reporting of attendance yesterday on the

report cards. If your is one of them please be advised that the issue is being

    addressed by your son/daughters teacher.

  • SPS Parents and Guardians

It is very easy to get caught up in the day-to-day operation of a school,

dealing with raccoons and wild turkeys let alone fundraisers and of course providing a quality Faith Based education

and sometimes we simply forget to say thank you.

We would like to change that.

To show our appreciation St. Philip School will host an adult picnic for SPS parents in the school courtyard. We will provide more details as the end of the school year nears, however please plan to join us for a fun evening in the courtyard.

Thank you for helping to meet our re-enrollment goal and Friday April 5 will be  a jeans day for students.

    Good afternoon

This is a reminder regarding re-registration. Tomorrow is the deadline for the re-registration challenge. Our goal is to have 85% complete by 12:00 tomorrow and students will recieve a jeans day,

as well as a special parents announcement. I will say this we are very close to the goal and a good push Friday should push us over the top.

On another note our new enrollments are continuing and are very encouraging. Our goal is still to have a class assignments and new school year information to parents prior to the end of the school year.

Let's all pull together and hit the mark... I am very excited to make the parent announcment when this is complete.

    Dr. Brian M. Dougherty

  • Please be advised that we were recently made aware of a typo in the registration form for Kindergarten through eighth grades. The paperwork you may have received mistakenly says 1-8 that should read K-8.

    We apologize for the confusion.

To be clear In registering one student or multiple students in the Kindergarten through 8th grades the registration fee is $50.00 for the entire registration and the multiple child discount is Kindergarten through eighth grades.

When registering a student for Pre-K or Pre-school the fee is $50.00. If you have a student in the K-8 program AND the Pre-school or Pre-K they are separate registrations requiring separate registration fees.

Pre-K and Pre-school students are not included in the multiple child discount.

Again, we apologize for the typo

If you have additional questions, please contact the school office at 412 928 2742.

  • Good afternoon,

I recently addressed the issue of enrollment at the recent PTG meeting. During that meeting I stated that we had about 25% of the re-registrations collected.

As of today, we have hit the 50% mark and we have 12 new families joining us. In fact, one family of two students enrolled today and will start Monday.

Considering the Catholic School closings that are taking place around us, we have received a number of calls from parents scheduling tours and we have additional tours scheduled over the next few weeks. It is heartening that our school was not considered in the changes/mergers and our 104-year presence will continue. LET me be clear, we are among the top six Catholic Schools in the South Region of the Diocese of Pittsburgh.

Therefore, we can turn our attention to several important items:

    1. We need to complete the re-registration process.
    2. It is our goal to provide all parents with class assignments and information packets for the 2019-2020 school year at the end of this school year.
    3. We would also like to hold an Orientation Night for new parents and would like to pair each new family with a current SPS family.

So I need and am offering the following.

    1. If we can hit the 85% mark in re-registration by March 29th I will schedule a JEANS DAY.
    2. If you are interested in being a SPS parent connection for new families, please email your interest asap.

    Thank you

    Dear Parents/Guardians

This letter is to inform you of a recent diagnosis of Viral Meningitis which has occurred

within the St. Philip School community.

The school office was notified today that a parent of two students currently attending SPS was recently diagnosis with Viral Meningitis. Viral meningitis can occur when an enterovirus such as the flu, coxsackievirus, etc. infect the central nervous system.

Viral meningitis is usually mild and often clears on its own. Only a small number of people infected with this virus ever get meningitis according to the CDC. Cases of viral meningitis usually go away on their own within 7 to 10 days.  This appears to be the expectation in this instance.

As always, frequent hand washing is recommended to avoid any illness.  Children with a sudden high fever, severe headache, or flu-like symptoms lasting longer than 7 days should consult their pediatrician.

We have advised the family involved that a medical release from their Doctor in 10 days will be required upon return to school.

    Together in youth,

    Dr. Brian M. Dougherty

    Principal

  • SPS Endowment for Catholic Edcuation

    Please review the announcment below

Purpose:          Established as long term funding source that will aid families with tuition hardship.

Description:     The SPS Endowment for Catholic Education was established to aid those families of students enrolled at St. Philip Roman Catholic Elementary experiencing economic hardship, to help meet their tuition obligation.

    Funding

Sources:         The SPS Endowment collects funding through several revenue streams, such as the Gala, Bequests, weekly Mass envelopes, and various fundraisers and donations as directed by the fundraising committee or the donor.

Recipients:      Families identified with the greatest need seeking assistance will be served first.

Application:    Families may request consideration at any time during the school year for tuition assistance for that specific school year. Requests can be made in writing to the Principal of the school or directly to the Business Office for the Parish.

Process:           1. Families seeking assistance at the beginning of the school year must have applied for the Bishop Education Fund Report from the Diocese of Pittsburgh. Through that process all families from SPS that complete their application for the Bishop Assistance                            Fund are then identified according to need compared to the entire Diocese. From that identification, St. Philip receives a yearly list of all families that have applied for the Bishop Education Fund and they are identified from the most to the least needy.

(It is important to note that St. Philip receives no specific financial information from the Diocese regarding the families that apply. We do receive a list that identifies those in most need in a descending order to the least needy based on the information given                           to the Diocese).

                           2. Families that experience hardship during the school year, that did not apply for the Bishops Education Fund, will be required to provide a statement in writing of the circumstances causing the hardship and may be required to provide proof of income.

                           3. Endowment forms may be picked up from the Parish Office.

    Selection of

Recipients:      1. Families that apply prior to the start of the school year will be reviewed according to the descending order of St. Philip parents as provided by the Bishops Education Fund

                          2. Families that apply during the school year will be reviewed according to relevant financial circumstances.

                          3. Determination of Endowment allocations will be made by the Pastor in conjunction with the Business Manager and Principal.

    Assistance

Guidelines:      In order to preserve the long-term intent of the fund and with the purpose of growing the fund the following will apply:

                          1. Expenditures of the fund will not exceed 35 percent of the total per year for the first three (3) years of the fund administration.

The specific time period 2019 through the 2022 school year. For instance, in the 2019-20 school year the amount available would be $9,100 based on a $26, 000 Fund balance.

                          2. Beginning with the 2022 school year, fund expenditures will not exceed 40% of the available total. This would remain in place as the balance grows.

  • March 4, 2019

    Dear Parent/Guardian,

This is a reminder for those of you that have not yet completed and returned your son/daughter’s registration forms for the 2019-2020 school year. It is imperative

that we receive the re-registration as soon as possible so that we may move forward with our classroom assignments for next school year. In the previous years it has

been the practice that the “homeroom listing” would be sent sometime in the summer however, this year we would like to get as much of the information out to

families at the beginning of the summer vacation.

    Thank you for your assistance,

Congratulations SPS JV Soccer and Good Luck in Diocesan Playoffs This Weekend!

The SPS JV Soccer team has qualified for the Diocesan playoffs and will start with a first-round game this Saturday, November 3, at 9:45 a.m. at Seton La Salle High School.  We know it’s early but it’s nearby and we hope to see lots of vocal support for the JV players.  If the team wins its early game, it will play later on Saturday at 3 pm in the semifinals, also at Seton La Salle.  A victory in that game would advance the JV team to the Diocesan championship game Sunday, November 4, at 1:15 pm at La Roche College.  We’ll keep everyone posted on the results of Saturday’s game(s)—hope to see you this weekend!

    Halloween Candy Collection- Nov. 1 & 5

As a part of our Respect Life Program, we are encouraging the children to share some of their Halloween goodies with the clients of Meals on Wheels, Citizen Care, and Allegheny Valley School. Children can bring their sharings of Trick or Treat goodies to school on November 1st  & 5th and deposit them in the boxes in the main hallway. Thank you for your help.

  • Parent Conference Information

On November 9th we will host our annual Parent/Teacher Conferences. In the past a notice would go home asking parents to identify the best times for them to attend and then the school would review and schedule parents accordingly. As you can imagine this is an extremely time-consuming process, as well over 300 conferences are scheduled.

In an effort to make the process more convenient for all involved we have created a SignUp Genius account.  In the coming days you will receive an email inviting you to access the St. Philip Conference Schedular. The process does not require you to join the site. Once in you will see our logo and the teachers listed and you can toggle to find additional teachers. When you find your son or daughters teacher you can scroll down and review the 28 time slots available. • FROM THE PRINCIPALS DESK

As parent teacher conferences near... PLEASE be advised that we are going to use a new program for parent signups. While I will be sending additional information regarding the process I think you will find this to be an easy process and the program is called Signup Genius. Please watch for more information.

Recently, St. Philip sent four teams to compete in the 2018 History Bowl competition at the Senator John Heinz History Center. Teams of 5th, 6th, 7th, and 8th graders visited exhibits and answered questions based on the artifacts in each section. The students were asked to interview an artist, identify famous people from a set of clues, compete in a sports scavenger hunt, and write a script for a talking exhibit.

The 5th grade team of Jake Johnson, Caroline Hall, Katelyn Miller, and Leo Shorthouse won 1st place in their category.

In the middle school category, the 7th grade team, Sean Kelsch, Charlie Colantonio, Gianna Marino, and Lilliana Peterson, took 2nd place.

And our 6th grade team of Addison Hazuda, Natalie Kirsch, Everett Sargent, and Tavon Lane tying for 1st place.

Rounding out our teams, the 8th grade team came in 4th place, one point shy of tying for 3rd.

SPS Cross Country had a fantastic showing at the Diocesan Championships recently.

As a team, our JV girls team of Addy Batts, Ava Lenigan, Katelyn Miller, Macie Trombetta, Shae Trombetta, Anna Stickman, and Nancy Rose Delien placed 11th overall. OUTSTANDING.

Our JV boys team of Conor Duplaga, Jacob Kaltz, Dashiell Sargent, Everett Sargent, Colin Ziolkowski, and Crosby Ziolkowski placed 9.

Two of our JV boys medaled, with Jacob Kaltz placing 11th, and Everett Sargent placing 17th.

Our varsity boys team of Charlie Colantonio, Max Gillen, and Will Stickman also had a great day, and ran personal best times.

On Friday the Capital Improvements projects continued with the sealing of the courtyard. This will help to perserve the new concrete. As you have seen the work to perserve the Stainglass windows in the Church is still underway, please use caution.

A big HATS OFF to Mrs. Janet Bartlett for an outstanding Art show. I hope you all had a chance to visit the show.

A new student handbook has been developed and is being printed. This will be coming home soon.

Just a reminder that you can signup to receive email BLASTS from the school by signing up at the blackboard site and joining the principal page.

There was an “in-house” fundraising contest during the Spirit Walk drive, the Eighth grade students raised the highest amount as a class and will receive a pizza party for their efforts.

Speaking of the Spirit Walk, I would offer a HUGE HATS OFF to the Mrs. Sharon Gaiten,                   Mrs. Terri Messner and Ms. Darci Lynn Reilly  for all their efforts as well as the entire committee. All I can say is WOW.  PLEASE NOTE: The "principals Desk copy that went home on Friday did not include Terri Messner, this was my error.

AND  don’t forget the Fall Masquerade OCTOBER 26, 2018

    Peace

  • Dear St. Philip School Families,

My name is Alexander Light, and it is a pleasure to announce that I will be teaching your children in band here! I have been the Director of Music at Bishop Canevin High School for a year and am excited to start as the Band Director here at St. Philip School.

I will be coming down to St. Philip on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays during the school day to provide pull-out lessons and full band. Below is the schedule for classes:

    • Tuesday
      • 5th Period (10:45 – 11:25): Beginning Brass (Trumpet, Trombone)
      • Recess (11:50 – 12:25): 5th – 8th Grade Saxophones and Trumpets
    • Wednesday
      • 5th Period (10:45 – 11:25): Beginning Woodwinds (Flute, Clarinet, Saxophone)
      • Recess (11:50 – 11:25): 5th – 8th Grade Flutes and Clarinets
    • Thursday
      • 5th Period (10:45 – 11:25): Beginning Percussion
      • Recess (11:50 – 12:25): Advanced Band (All Students Grades 5-8)

5th through 8th grade students will have band starting next week on Tuesday, October 16th.

We will have lessons in small groups with full band on Thursdays during recess.

Beginning Band students will not start next week. However, the students will have the opportunity to try out the various instruments during 5th period next week. More information about renting instruments will be sent home with the students next week. Even if your child already has an idea of what instrument he/she would like to play they still need to come down to see me during 5th period. I will be visiting the 4th grade class on Tuesday to demonstrate the instruments for them so they have an idea of what each instrument is.

For renting instruments, I recommend Volkwein’s Music out in Robinson. They are a very reliable company that do instrument rentals for many different schools. They have supplies and books that are needed for the students. To learn more about their rental program, visit their website: https://www.volkweinsmusic.com/pages/rentals.

If there are any questions, please contact me at lighta@bishopcanevin.org. More details about grading etc. will be sent home next week with the students when they come down for lesson. I look forward to working with your children, and thank you for encouraging their participation in the arts!

Sincerely, Alexander Light Director of Music
